Civil War roll of honor, 1861-1865.

This record group consists of the Civil War roll of honor (1861-1865) accumulated by the Adjustant General. On April 3, 1869, the state legislature passed a joint resolution appropriating $1,000 to the Adjutant General for the purpose of preparing a roll of honor, "upon which shall be inscribed the names of all such citizens of Michigan, not only as have fallen in battle or died in consequence of wounds received during the late war of the rebellion, but also all who died in Southern prisons, hospitals, and all other places, even though they may have served in regiments or batteries organized in other states, said roll to be a complete list of all the casualties of war among Michigan men." The work on this project was completed in 1872, with one copy being kept by the Adjutant General and a second deposited in the State Library. Contained in the record is name of soldier, rank, unit, age, date and place of enlistment, term, residence, and notes on when, where, and how death occurred. Includes index.

Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838.
